The database includes all summits in England that are over 2000 feet high (610 metres) and have a drop of at least 30 metres (about 100 feet) on all sides. There are 319 of these summits, 107 of which are also Marilyns. By using a measure of thirty metres, most of the insignificant tops listed by Nuttall & Nuttall (The Mountains of England and Wales, Cicerone Press 1991) have been excluded. Some of the summits that are listed here may also be regarded as insignificant, but as they are all at least 2000 feet above sea level they should have the terrain and weather conditions associated with high ground, even if they do not necessarily provide interesting walks or good viewpoints.
Any summit surrounded by four or more ten-metre contour lines is automatically included, any summit with only one or two ten-metre contours is excluded, while summits with exactly three ten-metre contours have been studied in more detail, and are included if there is a reasonable doubt about whether they should qualify for inclusion. In practice this means that a few of the summits may have only 25-29 metres of re-ascent.
